Women’s Heart Care
In the past, heart disease has been primarily associated with men. However, heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women. In fact, if a woman has a heart attack, she is more likely to die than a man. If she survives the heart attack, she is at a higher risk of having a second heart attack within a year. Every year almost 400,000 women die from cardiovascular disease, making it the number one killer of women in the United States.
Norton Women's Heart Center was the first center in the region devoted to heart disease awareness and prevention for women.Norton Heart Care understands the unique cardiac needs of women and has a variety of programs and treatment options available to meet those needs. From comprehensive diagnostic procedures to innovative surgeries, Norton Heart Care takes care of women’s hearts.
Heart Disease Prevention for Women
At age 40, the lifetime risk for cardiovascular disease is more than 1 in 2 women.* While there is no conclusive research that has determined when heart disease starts to develop, we know that it usually involves many variables and may take several years before someone is actually affected. There are several ways to lower your risk for heart disease:
Norton Women's Heart Center
Norton Women's Heart Center, located at Norton Suburban Hospital, offers a $40 heart disease risk screening, where a cardiovascular nurse performs a total lipid profile, cholesterol/HDL ratio, glucose, blood pressure, body fat analysis and ankle brachial index. The screening includes education on heart disease risk factors, reduction of the modifiable risk factors with lifestyle changes, and signs and symptoms of heart disease. A nurse will share results with you and offer advice on how to decrease risk factors for heart disease. The center focuses on the specific cardiology needs of women, including research, screenings, education, awareness and prevention programs, including public speaking, to teach women how to lower their risks.
The center offers appointment reminders by phone and built-in counseling sessions during every screening that allows you to openly discuss your health concerns with professionals.
